GLADSTONE, OR – Authorities say a 19-year-old man is facing murder charges following the death of his six-week-old son.

According to the Gladstone Police Department, officers were alerted on April 20 after the infant was admitted to Randall Children’s Hospital with a severe brain injury.

An initial investigation led to the arrest of the child’s father, Maliki Skutley, who was charged with first-degree assault.

The baby, identified as Paxton Schuler, succumbed to his injuries three days later, on April 23. Following the child’s death, a Clackamas County grand jury indicted Skutley on two counts of second-degree murder, in addition to the earlier assault charge.

Court documents obtained by KPTV reveal the incident occurred on April 16 and describe Skutley’s actions as “deliberately cruel.”

The investigation remains ongoing.

According to a GoFundMe campaign, the baby was declared brain dead and the mother had decided to “let him go.”

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
