LOUISVILLE, KY — A mother is facing an attempted murder charge after allegedly attacking her 6-year-old daughter with a hammer in a brutal incident that has left the child hospitalized in critical condition.

According to WLKY, officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department responded to a distress call around 12:45 p.m. Thursday on the 2900 block of Wilson Avenue, in the Park Duvalle neighborhood.

Upon arrival, officers found the young girl suffering from multiple blunt force injuries to her head. She was transported to Norton Children’s Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The child’s mother, 40-year-old Zeinab Abdi, was arrested at the scene and later charged with attempted murder (domestic violence).

In an interview with police, Abdi confessed to striking her daughter in the head with a hammer “an unknown amount of times,” according to the arrest report obtained by KKTV/WAVE.

Abdi further explained to officers that she “becomes extremely angry and has difficulty controlling herself.”

According to the arrest report, Abdi’s teenage son reportedly told police that during the aftermath of the assault, his mother said, “Let me finish her,” and attempted to return to the injured child before he was able to restrain her, KKTV/WAVE reported.

On Friday morning, Abdi appeared before a judge for her arraignment. In court, the judge ordered her to have no contact with any children, including her own.

“You are to have no contact with any child. Do you understand that?” the judge asked during the proceeding, according to WLKY.

Abdi’s bond was set at $500,000 cash, and she is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on June 30 at 9 a.m.
