BROWNSVILLE, TX — Two employees of a Texas daycare center have now been arrested in connection with the death of a 4-year-old child who police say was left behind in a hot daycare van and later found unresponsive.
According to ValleyCentral.com, 38-year-old Sendy Ruiz was taken into custody on Monday and charged with injury to a child causing death, a second-degree felony.
Ruiz was arraigned and issued a $60,000 bond.
Her arrest follows that of Karen Silva, 36, who was taken into custody Saturday on the same charge and is currently out on bond.
Authorities say both Ruiz and Silva were employees at The Learning Club Pre School and were the last individuals to use the van that four-year-old Logan Urbina was found in.
On Friday, the day of Logan’s death, the two women took children from the daycare on a field trip and returned to the facility at approximately 11:30 a.m., according to Cameron County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Mary Esther Sorola.
Logan, police say, was left behind inside the vehicle.
Brownsville Police Public Information Officer Abril Luna confirmed the details of the arrests and said the investigation remains ongoing. Officials have not yet specified the individual roles that Ruiz and Silva may have played in the incident.
A makeshift memorial began to grow Monday in the parking lot of the daycare where the van was parked, with flowers, candles, and stuffed animals left in Logan Urbina’s memory.
A GoFundMe campaign has also been launched to help support the Urbina family as they cope with the loss. To donate, click here.
