JOHNSON COUNTY, KY — A Kentucky man who fatally shot his 12-year-old daughter after sending her mother a chilling message has been sentenced to life in prison following a plea agreement.
Stacy Collins, 50, received two life sentences on April 16 after pleading guilty to the kidnapping and murder of his daughter, Stacia Collins. The sentences will be served concurrently, with the possibility of parole after 25 years, according to CBS affiliate WYMT.
The case dates back to August 2022, when Collins abducted Stacia and later took her life. Her mother, Summer Mullins, told NBC affiliate WSAZ at the time that she received a disturbing text that morning from Collins that read, “Do you want to talk to your daughter one last time?”
She never heard from either of them again.
Later that day, Stacia was found dead from a gunshot wound, miles away from home. Collins was also located with a self-inflicted gunshot wound but survived. After receiving medical treatment, he was taken into custody and charged with kidnapping and murder. He has remained at the Big Sandy Detention Center since, and he is expected to be transferred to a Kentucky state prison to serve his sentence.
During the sentencing hearing, Mullins addressed Collins directly in court. As reported by WSAZ, she said, “I hope you go to the worst place in Hell for all eternity.”
Stacia had not been at school the day of her death, and the text message Collins sent to Mullins has continued to haunt the case as a devastating signal of what was to come.
Initially pleading not guilty, Collins accepted a plea deal in March, avoiding a trial.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
