PONTIAC, MI — A Michigan man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the 2021 killing of his 8-year-old sister, Bailei Singleton, in what prosecutors described as a senseless act of gun violence over the “slightest of disagreements.”
Gyasi Stribling, now 24, was found guilty by an Oakland County Circuit Court jury after a two-day trial that concluded Wednesday, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office and court records.
Authorities say the fatal shooting occurred in January 2021 at the Twelve North Apartments, located near 12 Mile and Telegraph Road. Stribling, who was 20 at the time, allegedly shot Bailei in the head in the living room of their home because she was “talking back” to him.
Initially, Stribling claimed his sister had been shot during a robbery. However, investigators later determined this account was false after speaking to two other witnesses who were present at the time, according to reports by the Detroit News.
Prosecutors also said Stribling attempted to hide evidence related to the shooting.
“Bailei Singleton should still be here with us today,” said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald in a statement. “Her murder was a tragedy for her family. It’s unconscionable that anyone, let alone an 8-year-old child, could be murdered by a relative and in their own home over the slightest of disagreements. This case is, unfortunately, a reminder of how gun violence is a public health epidemic that can end a life in an instant.”
The conviction comes amid a string of recent gun-related tragedies in Michigan. Just last month, a Madison Heights couple was sentenced to probation after their child accidentally shot himself with an unsecured firearm, the Detroit News reported.
In separate incidents, a former Flat Rock police officer died in a domestic shooting, and a gunfight among friends and family in Detroit resulted in one death and another person seriously injured.
Stribling’s sentencing will take place in late May, and he faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
