HARFORD COUNTY, MD — The children of Rachel Morin, a Maryland woman killed while jogging in 2023, have filed a lawsuit alleging that family members misappropriated funds donated in the aftermath of her death.
According to the lawsuit, a GoFundMe campaign launched shortly after Morin’s murder raised nearly $55,000. The fundraiser was initially promoted as a way to help cover funeral expenses, with remaining funds intended to support Morin’s five children, who are now between the ages of 9 and 19.
However, the lawsuit claims the children have yet to receive any of the money or gifts collected in their name, CBS News Baltimore reported.
The funds were allegedly managed by Morin’s mother, Patty Morin, and her sister, Rebekah Morin. The lawsuit accuses both women of withholding the money, despite the public understanding that the donations were meant to benefit the children directly.
Morin was found dead on August 6, 2023, off the Ma & Pa Trail in Harford County, Maryland. She had gone for a jog and never returned. Authorities later confirmed she had been raped and murdered.
The man responsible, Victor Martinez-Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, was arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, following a 10-month manhunt. DNA evidence from Morin’s case linked him to a previous assault and home invasion in Los Angeles, involving a child and her mother.
Martinez-Hernandez had fled to the U.S. while wanted for murder in his home country.
He is scheduled to be sentenced for Morin’s murder in August 2025.
