VENTURA, CA — Two teenagers from California have been formally charged with the murder of a man who was attacked and killed while sleeping outside a local church, according to an announcement this week by Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko.

According to authorities, 63-year-old Davy Glen Pichel was found dead in the early morning hours of June 5 outside St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Oxnard, California.

A church volunteer discovered his body near a side entrance around 6:40 a.m. He had suffered severe injuries to his head and face and was partially unclothed. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police say church surveillance footage from the night before captured the fatal assault. The video allegedly shows the two teens, ages 14 and 15, approaching Pichel as he sat beside his wheelchair near the church’s side door.

The footage reportedly depicts the teens beating and stomping him before walking away—only to return moments later to continue the assault, police said.

They allegedly repeated this cycle a third time, during which they are accused of removing part of Pichel’s clothing before fleeing.

The teens appeared in court on June 10 for arraignment in juvenile court.

At the request of their defense attorneys, the hearing was postponed until June 24. Both minors have been ordered to remain in custody at the Ventura County Juvenile Facility in the meantime.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The teens are due back in court on June 24 at 8:30 a.m.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
