EAST HAVEN, CT — An arrest has been made in connection to a tragic death of an infant who was found unresponsive in a bathtub in October 2024.
Angel Marcus Rodriguez, 29, was charged with manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and other crimes in connection to the death of his seven-month-old son, Angel Josiah Rodriguez.
On October 6, 2024, at approximately 9:09 p.m., police responded to an address on Redfield Avenue, in East Haven, Connecticut, to assist with a pediatric emergency, the East Haven Police Department said in a news release.
Upon arrival, a seven-month-old child, later identified as Angel Josiah Rodriguez, was found unresponsive after being left unattended in a bathtub. Medics attempted life saving measures on scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died.
The investigation was subsequently assigned to the East Haven Police Department’s Investigative Services Division and was led by Detective Monique Colbert.
The investigation revealed that the child’s father, identified as Angel Marcus Rodriguez, left two young children, one being the victim, unattended in a bathtub.
When the child was discovered unresponsive in the bathtub by another family member, Rodriguez was found in a bedroom down the hall talking on his phone, police said.
Rodriguez advised investigators that he left the bathroom briefly while Angel was reclined in an infant bathing chair while the faucet was on a trickle.
Family members on scene performed CPR on the child until East Haven Fire Department medics arrived and took over life saving measures.
Authorities say Angel’s primary residence was in Ansonia, CT, with his mother, who was not on scene during this incident and was not involved during the incident.
According to arrest documents acquired by the New Haven Register, the father admittedly left the two children alone in the bathtub while he went to use another bathroom in the residence because the toilet in the children’s bathroom did not flush properly. He did not initially recall how long he was gone, but later he was gone for maybe five minutes while the children bathed alone.
The little boy was found by his grandmother, facedown in the tub, while his older brother was playing with toy cars right beside him.
The older boy allegedly told his grandmother “he just turned over” when she walked in, according to police.
On December 3, 2024, the State of Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner officially determined Angel’s cause of Death to be a Drowning.
Angel Marcus Rodriguez was taken into custody at his residence on March 31, 2025.
He was held on a $100,000.00 court set bond and formally charged with Manslaughter in the Second Degree, two counts of Risk of Injury to a Minor, and two counts of Reckless Endangerment.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
