FISHERS, IN – Police say a cemetery worker was caught digging up a grave in search of a gold ring he had buried days earlier.

According to the Fishers Police Department, officers were patrolling near Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, in Fishers, Indiana, on the night of May 12 when they noticed an unattended vehicle parked suspiciously near the cemetery grounds.

Police say a shotgun and other paraphernalia was seen in plain view in the vehicle.

While investigating, the officer encountered a man later identified as 24-year-old Seth Davidson emerging from the nearby wooded area, covered in dirt.

Davidson told police he was employed by Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens and had recently buried a cremation urn that contained a gold ring. He admitted returning to the site with the intent to retrieve the ring and pawn it, police said.

“He confessed that he couldn’t stop thinking about the ring,” a news release stated.

Upon noticing the officers, Davidson said he hid the ring behind a dumpster. He later guided officers to the hidden ring and to the disturbed gravesite.

Police arrested Davidson on multiple charges, including felony theft, criminal trespass, cemetery mischief, and disturbing human remains without authorization.

Detectives confirmed with Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens that Davidson was indeed employed there, and cemetery staff reported that—based on a thorough check—it appeared only one gravesite was affected.

The family of the deceased was notified.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
