SAN ANTONIO, TX — A Texas man is accused of firing a handgun at a family’s minivan during a road rage incident that left a 10-year-old girl critically wounded.
According to KENS5 , San Antonio police officers were dispatched around 7:25 a.m. Friday to a reported shooting in progress.
Police said they found two adults and a 10-year-old girl suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to her torso. Officers began life-saving measures until EMS transported the child to University Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery, according to investigators cited by KENS5.
The child was later identified by WOIA as Alisa Gates. Her father told KENS5 that she is now out of bed and starting to walk.
Police and court records identify the suspect as 41-year-old Bryan Arceo, who is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and child endangerment, according to arrest affidavits obtained by KSAT and KENS5.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by KSAT, the shooting stemmed from a road rage encounter near Timberhill Drive and Wurzbach Road. Investigators said Arceo was driving a gray Nissan Murano when he backed out of a private driveway in the 4300 block of Timberhill Drive and cut off a maroon Kia minivan carrying the victims.
The affidavit states that the minivan’s driver honked her horn as the vehicles approached Wurzbach Road. According to KSAT, investigators say Arceo then sped up and “brake checked” the family’s vehicle.
Police said the minivan passed Arceo and stopped at a red light at Timberhill and Wurzbach. According to the affidavit cited by all three outlets, the mother told investigators she saw Arceo point a handgun at her vehicle while stopped at the intersection.
As she turned right and accelerated to get away, she heard a loud “pop,” according to the affidavit. The father, who was seated in the front passenger seat, told investigators he smelled gunpowder, KSAT reported. The 10-year-old girl, who was seated in the back, then told her parents she had been shot, according to police records cited by KSAT and KENS5.
Investigators later recovered a live 9mm round at the intersection where the shooting occurred, according to the affidavit referenced by KSAT and KENS5.
According to police accounts cited by WOIA and KENS5, Arceo made an illegal turn and ended up behind the family’s vehicle, following them for several blocks. The affidavit states that Arceo eventually stopped, exited his vehicle while holding a handgun and stood in the roadway, prompting the family to drive around him and flee.
The arrest affidavit further states that Arceo’s ex-wife and their 11-year-old daughter were inside his vehicle at the time of the shooting. According to KSAT, the ex-wife told investigators she saw Arceo point the gun at the minivan and rack the slide before firing. “She looked away and heard a pop,” the affidavit states.
WOIA and KSAT report that after the shooting, Arceo dropped his ex-wife off at her workplace. Investigators told KENS5 that surveillance footage later showed Arceo dropping off a child at a nearby school shortly afterward, consistent with witness statements.
Arceo was arrested hours later on the city’s far Northeast Side, according to WOIA and KSAT, and booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center.
Court records cited by KSAT and KENS5 show Arceo is charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of child endangerment. The child endangerment charge stems from investigators’ findings that Arceo knowingly placed his own daughter in danger by firing a handgun while she was inside the vehicle.
His total bond was set at $375,000, according to court records.
