LOS ANGELES, CA — A young boy and girl were shot and killed Sunday, Oct. 11, near a Pico-Union intersection, and the suspected gunman was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

The children were believed to be about 4 and 10 years old. According to the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles police said a man believed to be their father shot the children and then himself. He remained in custody at the hospital, and his condition was not immediately clear.

The shooting happened near Catalina Street and Venice Boulevard. The Times placed it around 12:40 p.m.; KTLA reported that LAPD received a shooting report at 12:49 p.m.

Officers found the two children and the man suffering from gunshot wounds. All three were taken to a nearby hospital, where the children were pronounced dead. KTLA identified the victims as a boy approximately 4 years old and a girl approximately 10, and described the suspect as roughly 30 to 40 years old.

The man’s relationship to the children had not been definitively established in the reports. While the Times reported that police believed he was their father, KTLA said investigators were still working to identify the relationship and notify the children’s next of kin.

Investigators Seek Video From Passing Bus

KTLA reported that a woman riding a Metro bus saw the shooting next to Loyola High School and called for the bus to stop, hoping someone could help the children. The Times said police could not confirm the witness details reported by KTLA.

Metro separately confirmed to KTLA that investigators had requested footage from a bus passing through the area. The agency said the bus might have recorded the incident and that LAPD was leading the investigation. Neither report established what, if anything, the footage showed.

Video from the scene showed police and Los Angeles Fire Department vehicles, including at least two ambulances, with officers sealing off part of the area. The Times described emergency vehicles gathered at a sidewalk and a street blocked by police tape.

LAPD described the case to KTLA as a possible attempted murder-suicide and said there was no ongoing threat to the community. The reports did not identify the children or the suspect or establish a motive.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
