LOS ANGELES, CA — Two brothers, ages 4 and 11, died after their father allegedly shot them on a Pico-Union street Sunday afternoon before shooting himself. The 35-year-old survived and remained hospitalized in police custody.
The Los Angeles Police Department described the Oct. 11 shooting as a possible attempted murder-suicide, according to KTLA. Investigators also requested footage from a Metro bus that passed through the area and may have recorded the incident.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire near Catalina Street and Venice Boulevard at 12:49 p.m. They found the two children and their father suffering from gunshot wounds, an LAPD spokesperson said. All three were taken to a nearby hospital, where authorities confirmed that both boys died from their injuries.
Police identified the suspected gunman as the children’s father but did not release his name in the account reported by KTLA. The boys’ names were also not provided. Police said the father shot himself after shooting the children.
The shooting happened near Loyola High School in daylight. KTLA reporter Hailey Winslow reported that a woman riding a Metro bus witnessed the shooting and yelled for the driver to stop, hoping the children could be helped.
Metro confirmed to KTLA that police had requested video from a bus traveling through the area at the time. The agency said the footage might have captured the shooting and that LAPD was leading the investigation. The report did not establish what, if anything, the footage showed.
Video posted to the Citizen app showed a large police response and at least two Los Angeles Fire Department ambulances at the scene. Officers blocked off much of the surrounding area while investigators worked to establish what led to the shooting.
An LAPD spokesperson said Sunday that there was no ongoing threat to the community. The reporting did not identify a motive or explain the circumstances preceding the gunfire.
