, PA (PPP)— In an early morning incident at a bus stop in McKeesport, two individuals engaged in a heated altercation that culminated in a stabbing.

According to a criminal complaint filed in District Court, at approximately 6:30 a.m., McKeesport Police responded to a call reporting a fight between two males. Upon arriving at the scene, Sergeant Byers and Officer Dunlevy discovered a gold Nissan Altima with traces of blood near the driver’s side and trunk.

The primary victim emerged from the vehicle with a blood-soaked towel wrapped around his hand. Accompanying him was a female passenger, who exited from the passenger side.

According to officers, the victim revealed a puncture wound on his right palm and provided his account of the incident. He explained that he had been giving a ride to work to an individual known as Shawn Hogan, who had been involved in a romantic relationship with the victim’s ex-wife. The tension escalated into a physical altercation, during which Hogan allegedly retrieved a pocketknife from his pants and stabbed the victim in the hand. Hogan quickly fled the scene by boarding a bus.

According to the complaint, Emergency Medical Services promptly transported the victim to a nearby hospital for further medical attention, while detectives documented the crime scene with photographs.

Meanwhile, the complaint says officers apprehended Hogan on a bus and took him into custody. During the subsequent interview at the police station, Hogan confirmed the events but stated that he acted in self-defense.

Believing the victim was retrieving a weapon from the trunk of his vehicle, Hogan rushed him, leading to a physical altercation where he “blacked out” and stabbed the victim with a pocketknife. Hogan indicated the approximate location of the stabbing as his rib cage, according to the report.

On 26 March, 2023 at approximately 0630 hours McKeesport Police are dispatched to ████████████ located at ████████████ for two males fighting in the street. Sgt. Byers and I, Officer Dunlevy, arrive on scene and observe a gold in color Nissan Altima bearing PA registration ███████ parked on ███████ Way in front of the bus stop. Officers are able to observe a fresh pool of blood outside the driver side of the vehicle as well as near the trunk of the vehicle. At thls time a male, later identified as ███████, exits the vehicle with a towel covered in blood wrapped around his hand. A female, later identified as Kawaona ███████, also exits the vehicle from the passenger side.

As Officers make contact with ███████ he states, “He stabbed me and got on the bus”. ███████ then exposes his wound and officers were able to observe a puncture wound to ███████’s right palm. ███████ explains the following to officers:

███████ was giving ███████ a ride to work when he observes a male known to him, later identified as Shawn HOGAN, standing at the bus stop in front of ████████████. ███████ and HOGAN are former friends but have since ended their friendship after HOGAN and ███████ begin a romantic relationship. This created an issue between the two because ███████ and ███████ were formerly married. At this time ███████ pulls his vehicle to the side of the roadway and begins arguing with HOGAN. The argument eventually becomes physical, and HOGAN retrieves a pocketknife from his front pants pocket and stabs ███████ in the hand. ███████ then separates the two and HOGAN boards the bus.

███████ was transported to UPMC McKeesport by McKeesport EMS for further treatment. The crime scene was photographed by Det. Goughnour and all photos will be preserved for any future proceedings.

Sgt. Byers and Officer J. Thomas locate HOGAN on a Port Authority Bus and take him into custody. In HOGAN’s left front jean pocket a black and silver pocketknife is located. Once at the station HOGAN is seated in the McKeesport Police Department interview room and is read verbatim the McKeesport Police Miranda Rights form by myself, which is witnessed by Sgt, Gault. HOGAN verbally states he understands his rights as well as signs that he understands his rights. HOGAN agrees to speak to Officers and explains the following:

HOGAN was at the bus stop in front of ████████████ when he observes his ex-girlfriend (███████) and her ex-husband (███████) drive past. Next ███████ parks and exits the vehicle, hits the lever inside the vehicle for the trunk to open, and begins yelling at HOGAN. HOGAN believed that ███████ was opening the trunk to retrieve a weapon, so he rushes ███████. The two then begin fighting and HOGAN “blacks out” and stabs ███████ with his pocketknife. After stabbing ███████ HOGAN boards the bus. When asked where he believes he stabbed ███████ HOGAN points to his rib cage and stated, “Right here”.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
