A pair of Canadian men were taken into custody with attempted murder charges after one traveled to California and allegedly stabbed a woman and her boyfriend in her home.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said 25-year-old Devin Wolfgang Vandorhoef had a “year-long obsession” with an unnamed woman he met through online gaming. His obsession led him to travel to Salinas, California, with 25-year-old Darius Avery Whyte, to confront the woman.
On the evening of November 25, just before 10 p.m., police responded to a home in Salinas, where they found a woman and her boyfriend had been stabbed. Authorities later confirmed the residence was that of the woman Vandorhoef had been fixated on.
Law enforcement officials stated that Vandorhoef, disguised as an Amazon delivery driver, arrived at the woman’s home. When the boyfriend answered the door, Vandorhoef allegedly forced his way inside and began stabbing him with a knife, causing critical injuries. In an attempt to protect her boyfriend, the woman grabbed a sharp metal object, but Vandorhoef allegedly stabbed and strangled her as well. Both victims were hospitalized for their injuries.
Investigators revealed that Vandorhoef had brought a package with him as part of his plan. Inside the package were handcuffs, duct tape, and knives, though authorities say they are still unsure of his intended use for the items.
Whyte, who was reportedly at the scene, initially claimed he had no knowledge of Vandorhoef’s intentions. He was arrested, but later released. On November 26, he was taken into custody again at San Jose Mineta International Airport while attempting to board a flight back to Canada.
Vandorhoef faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit attempted murder, mayhem, stalking, and burglary. Whyte has been charged as a co-conspirator and is facing charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit attempted murder. Both men are being held at Monterey County Jail. Vandorhoef’s bond was set at $4.15 million, while Whyte’s bond was set at $1 million.
Both men were arraigned on December 2, after a delay to allow Vandorhoef to recover from his injuries. They pleaded not guilty, and their next court appearance is scheduled for December 10.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
