A Texas man is accused of stabbing a Black Friday shopper in the neck with a pair of scissors inside a Target bathroom.
According to court documents, Robert Weldon Fields was arrested on Monday on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the attack on Angel Perez Luna.
According to KDFW, officers with the Dallas Police Department, responded to a Dallas-area Target store in 2400 block of South Haskell Avenue regarding a reported stabbing at about 11:30 a.m. on Friday, November 29.
First responders found the victim inside the store and transported him to Baylor Scott & White Hospital for treatment.
The suspect, later identified as Fields, had fled before authorities arrived. Surveillance footage from the store showed Fields entering the men’s bathroom at 10:34 a.m. and leaving around 11:19 a.m. A witness told police that at 11 a.m., he heard Fields say, “Today, I’m going to commit a crime,” according to WFAA.
Shortly after, Perez Luna entered the bathroom and was stabbed. Perez Luna later told officers that Fields appeared to be mumbling while sitting on the sink. As Perez Luna walked out, Fields allegedly attacked, stabbing him in the neck with scissors. Despite chasing Fields, Perez Luna collapsed outside the bathroom.
Fields evaded capture for three days until December 2, when officers spotted him at a DART station, attempting to board without paying.
During questioning, Fields initially denied involvement but later remarked, “If I had stabbed him, he would be dead,” adding, “I was surprised that he survived,” per the warrant. The arresting officers also noted that Fields appeared to be wearing the same clothing he had on during the alleged stabbing.
Perez Luna was reportedly in critical condition following the attack, but was “getting better” after having two surgeries, according to KDFW.
Fields is currently incarcerated in the Dallas County Jail with a $75,000 bond.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with Perez Luna’s medical expenses.
