A New York City bus driver allegedly attacked and stabbed a passenger in their head and leg with a knife after getting into a “verbal dispute” on his Friday afternoon route.

According to the New York Police Department, 58-year-old Ian Bascombe was driving a southbound B41 bus in Brooklyn, New York, when passenger—33-year-old Quentin Branch—asked him to stop.

NYPD officials told Law&Crime the passenger wanted to exit at an “unauthorized stop.”

Police say Branch claimed he boarded the wrong bus and wanted to get off. Bascombe allegedly kept driving to try and find a safe place to pull over, which led to Branch to attacking him.

Branch allegedly told Bascombe “I’m going to break your jaw” before striking him in the left eye, according to the New York Post.

Bascombe later stabbed Branch with a knife multiple times, according to police.

Branch was transported to a medical facility and is reportedly in stable condition.

Both men were arrested and charged for the incident. Bascombe is charged with two counts of second- and third-degree assault and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, while Branch was charged with one count of second-degree harassment and two counts of second- and third-degree assault.

“Violence on buses puts New Yorkers at risk and is not acceptable,” said Frank Annicaro, NYC Transit’s senior vice president for buses, in a statement to local media outlets. “Pending internal review, this Bus Operator is being withheld from service.”

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
