ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO — Investigative details have emerged regarding a brutal and senseless attack that was racially-motivated in Missouri.
Court documents show 39-year-old Shawn E. Singer, of St. Louis, Missouri, was charged with assault motivated by discrimination, a felony of the fourth-degree, on February 22.
According to a criminal complaint, St. Louis County police responded to a grocery store on Olive Boulevard for a report of a fight in progress on February 21.
Upon arrival, officers met with Singer, who was identified as the assailant. Singer initially said “it was just me” and that he wasn’t saying anything else. After he was placed in handcuffs, Singer “spontaneously” said, “I’m tired of foreigners, man,” the complaint states.
Singer continued his rant, claiming that immigrants were “making our money cost so much more than it should.”
“F***ing people trampling over us,” he said. “I’m next f***ing going to China to take them down because they were part of the COVID vaccine, virus.”
Officers then spoke with the victim, who explained he was walking in an aisle of the store when Singer passed him in the opposite direction and “mumbled something.” The victim, who could not hear what was uttered, asked Singer if he had said something. Singer then replied, “go back to your f***ing country,” the affidavit alleges.
The victim reportedly asked Singer what he had ever done to him, and Singer proceeded to approach the victim, raised his fists, and began swinging. The victim attempted to get away, but stumbled and fell to the floor. Singer then got on top of him and struck him repeatedly in the face and upper body.
According to the complaint, a bystander attempted to pull Singer off the victim, but could not do so. The fight was eventually broken up when a bystander said police had been called and were on their way.
Following the arrest, Singer continued to make “spontaneous” statements, including “Don’t blame this on me, man, there’s people who are from mother countries that are taking jobs away from us … I’m speaking about jobs in construction, jobs in workplace, foreigners are taking over.”
Singer also called an officer a “punk,” and asked, “Can’t you see what I’m trying to do? People from other countries trying to take our jobs,” according to court records.
Police did not describe the victim and whether or not he was actually an illegal immigrant. However, charging documents say Singer committed the crime “because of (victim’s) national origin and race.”
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
