ESCAMBIA COUNTY, FL — A United States Postal Service carrier in Florida has been arrested after authorities say he intentionally drove his mail truck toward a child who was trying to return a misdelivered package, an incident that unfolded in a residential neighborhood just after Christmas.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the area of Sacred Heart on Dec. 27 after receiving a report that a child had been struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Kingfisher Way and Kingfisher Court. Investigators later determined that the incident stemmed from a package delivered to the wrong address, according to reporting by the Pensacola News Journal.

FHP said 41-year-old William White Jr., a postal carrier for USPS, had dropped off a package at a home on Kingfisher Way that was not the intended destination. The 10-year-old child who lives at that home noticed the mistake and attempted to return the package to the correct address, according to FHP accounts cited by WKRG and the News Journal.

Investigators said the child placed the package on an electric scooter and headed toward the correct house. At that point, White saw the child with the package and believed the child was stealing it, according to FHP.

“White then purposely drove the USPS vehicle towards the child and ran over the scooter,” an FHP report stated, as quoted by the Pensacola News Journal. The child was able to get out of the way and reach a nearby yard before the scooter was struck.

Florida Highway Patrol officials told WKRG that White’s mail vehicle hit the scooter, but the child escaped unharmed. After the collision, White allegedly yelled at the child and removed the scooter from beneath the USPS vehicle, placing it inside the truck, according to FHP.

WALA reported that a family member of the child then confronted White. FHP said that after the confrontation, White threw the scooter into a yard on Blue Jay Way before leaving the area.

White was interviewed by investigators and arrested on Dec. 31 after returning to work, according to WALA and WKRG. Escambia County Jail records show he is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal mischief and petit theft. WKRG and the Pensacola News Journal both reported that White was booked into the Escambia County Jail and later posted a $5,500 bond.

The United States Postal Service issued a statement to the Pensacola News Journal following the arrest, emphasizing that the agency is taking the allegations seriously. “The U.S. Postal Service takes the safety and well-being of our customers and employees seriously,” the statement said. “The Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the Postal Service, is actively investigating this issue in partnership with local law enforcement. We can confirm that the individual has been employed 2025. The Postal Service does not publicly comment on personnel matters.”

The Florida Highway Patrol investigation remains ongoing.
