OAKLAND, CA — A 39-year-old man faces murder charges after police said he shot and killed a prominent registered nurse and health influencer during an attempted robbery in downtown Oakland on May 31.
Shacory Carnell Daniels was charged with murder, attempted robbery, personal and intentional discharge of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as per a news release from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities said Daniels shot 33-year-old Lartey Solomon while Solomon walked to his car near 14th Street and Harrison Street. Officers arrested Daniels on June 4 in Menlo Park, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. Daniels is scheduled to appear in court on June 30.
Solomon gained popularity on TikTok under the name “Nurse Solomon,” where he accumulated more than 20,000 followers and 1 million views. He used the platform to share medical advice and discuss daily life as a healthcare professional.
Family members told local television station KTVU that Solomon and a friend were leaving a nightclub when a man approached them and demanded Solomon’s necklace.
Solomon’s mother, Florence Edward, told the station that the man approached her son and said, “Give me your chain.” Edward said her son told the man he could have it and prepared to take off his belongings.
Solomon’s friend told Edward that he walked toward his own car when he heard gunfire. Solomon died from his injuries at the scene.
The victim’s brother, Emmanuel Solomon, told KTVU that his brother feared firearms. He said it was tough for the family that his brother died from gun violence because he was scared of guns.
Solomon immigrated to Oakland from Ghana and later studied nursing at Samuel Merritt University, according to an online fundraising page created to assist with funeral expenses and support his family.
Solomon worked as a registered nurse at the Alameda Healthcare and Wellness Center and at Kindred Hospital in San Leandro. GoFundMe organizers said nursing was Solomon’s calling and he used his online platform to educate people on health so they could make informed decisions.
The fundraising page stated that Solomon treated everyone with dignity, patience and kindness, earning the trust of his patients and the respect of his colleagues.
Solomon’s sister-in-law, Nana Ekua Solomon, told KTVU that Solomon did not create online content for financial gain, but out of passion. She said the family wants his legacy to continue.
Solomon is survived by his parents, siblings, and an 11-year-old daughter. The GoFundMe page states that his death left a large void for his daughter, parents, siblings, and patients.
