BUFFALO GROVE, IL — A Buffalo Grove man is facing a slate of criminal charges after authorities say he attempted to kill his wife in a brutal attack that spilled out onto a residential street — only to be interrupted by a nearby lawn care worker.

According to Buffalo Grove Police, the incident unfolded on the morning of August 20 around 10:50 a.m., when officers responded to reports of a woman being attacked in the 200 block of Forest Place in Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

When officers arrived, they found the 29-year-old victim near a lawn care worker who, police say, had intervened to protect her.

The suspect, 34-year-old Cody Romano, allegedly assaulted his wife inside their home before the confrontation moved outdoors. Investigators say Romano tried to smother the woman with a pillow, reportedly telling her he was going to kill her. According to a statement released by Buffalo Grove police, the attack also included Romano breaking the victim’s cellphone to prevent her from calling for help.

Both WGN-TV and Fox 32 Chicago reported that the woman managed to escape the home during the assault and fled into the street, where she encountered the lawn care worker. That individual is said to have shielded her from Romano as he allegedly attempted to drag her back inside. A brief struggle ensued before Romano fled the scene.

Police say Romano returned a short time later and was taken into custody. Following his arrest, he reportedly experienced a medical episode and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He remained hospitalized for eight days and was formally charged after his release on August 28, according to WGN-TV.

Romano is now facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery, two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery, and one count of interfering with the reporting of domestic battery.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges following the investigation.

Romano appeared in court on August 29 and remains in custody. His pre-trial detention hearing is scheduled for September 23. As of now, police have not released information about what may have led to the alleged attack.
