MIAMI, FL — A former NFL wide receiver has been extradited to the U.S. and is now in custody, facing attempted murder charges stemming from a May shooting in Miami.

Antonio Brown, 37, was named in a June arrest warrant that accused him of firing a weapon during an altercation after a celebrity boxing event. He is now facing a charge of second-degree attempted murder with a firearm.

Brown was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals in Dubai, according to an article published by People magazine. He was extradited to New Jersey and is expected to be transferred to Florida to face the felony charge. The shooting occurred near a celebrity boxing match hosted by the streamer Adin Ross.

Video footage of the incident was posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The footage reportedly showed Brown involved in a physical confrontation with a group of people.

After the fighting, the group proceeded to a nearby alleyway. Brown could be seen running toward the group. He was holding an object in his hand moments before the sounds of gunshots could be heard.

Following the event, Brown gave his defense on Ross’s subsequent Kick livestream. He alleged during the stream that he had been jumped by multiple individuals before the shots were fired. Brown then cited a medical reason for his behavior during the confrontation.

He claimed that he has Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a neurological disease that has been linked to repeated head trauma. The condition has been found in hundreds of deceased football players. Brown told Ross that the disease caused him to lose control during the incident.

“I got CTE, I blacked out,” Brown said on the stream. “I blacked out, Adin. I don’t know what happened.”

Brown was detained immediately after the May incident, but he was not formally arrested at that time, according to the Associated Press. The subsequent investigation by Miami detectives and prosecutors led to the June warrant and his arrest in Dubai.

The attempted murder charge is the latest in a series of legal troubles for the former All-Pro wide receiver. Brown played 12 seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 2019, Brown faced a civil lawsuit filed by his former trainer, Britney Taylor. Taylor accused the former athlete of sexual assault in the complaint. Brown denied the allegations in his own statement and filed a countersuit against Taylor. The parties involved in the civil matter eventually reached a settlement.

In 2020, the NFL suspended Brown for eight games after he violated the league’s personal conduct policy on multiple occasions. He was then a free agent.

The suspension followed a dispute with a moving truck driver that resulted in Brown being charged with burglary with assault, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, and criminal mischief. Brown pleaded no contest to the charges, according to court documents obtained by People, and was sentenced to two years of probation.

More recently, in October 2023, Brown was arrested on charges related to child support. He was accused of failing to pay court-ordered child support to the mother of his eldest daughter. He was released from custody after posting a $15,000 bond in that case.

The current attempted murder case will move forward as he is transferred from New Jersey to Florida. Brown remains in custody while awaiting his transfer to Florida.

He is expected to appear in Miami-Dade County I Circuit Court. Brown’s legal team has cited chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) as a contributing factor in his behavior during the May altercation—placing the condition at the center of their argument.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
