DUNMURRY, NORTHERN IRELAND — A car bomb exploded outside a police station in Dunmurry late Saturday after attackers stopped a delivery driver, placed an improvised explosive device in his vehicle and ordered him to drive it to the station, authorities said.
The blast happened at about 10:30 p.m. as police were evacuating nearby residents, Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton said Sunday. He said the bomb was fashioned from a compressed gas cylinder and described the device as recklessly unpredictable despite its limited sophistication and scale.
According to an Associated Press report carried by News4JAX, Singleton said the device was deployed against police in close proximity to the public in what officials condemned as an attack on both officers and a residential community.
Brendan Mullan, chairman of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, said the bomb was sent to kill officers and cause maximum harm in the heart of a residential area. He said the public had overwhelmingly endorsed the 1998 Good Friday Agreement and that such violence had no place in a society committed to peace.
Police linked the bombing to broader efforts to undermine the peace agreement that largely ended decades of violence in Northern Ireland. Dissident Republican groups that oppose the peace process still carry out sporadic attacks, authorities said.
The Dunmurry bombing came weeks after a similar plot in Lurgan on March 30. In that case, police said two masked men stopped a delivery driver, placed an explosive device in the trunk of the vehicle and forced him at gunpoint to take it to a police station about 20 miles southwest of Dunmurry. Officers later carried out a controlled explosion after evacuating about 100 homes.
Police previously said the Lurgan attack was probably carried out by dissident Republican groups in what they called a pathetic attempt to remain relevant and provoke fear.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
