MEMPHIS, TN — Former Kansas basketball player Lagerald Vick, 29, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and using a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony after police said he shot a man during a Fourth of July gathering in Memphis.

According to WPXI’s report, citing Memphis police, WREG, ESPN and KSHB, the victim told investigators he got into a verbal argument with Vick around 10:30 p.m. on July 4 in the city’s Frayser neighborhood, then turned to walk away before Vick allegedly followed him and shot him in the lower back.

Court records cited in the report say Memphis police later spoke with the wounded man at a hospital around 2 a.m. on July 5. The victim identified Vick in a photo lineup after first giving police the alleged shooter’s first name, according to the charging documents summarized in the report.

Vick played four seasons at Kansas from 2015 through 2019 and was part of the 2018 team that reached the Final Four. The report also said he had already been arrested in April on unrelated charges including aggravated burglary, theft of property and misdemeanor vandalism in a separate case involving a former girlfriend’s home.

Bail on the attempted murder charge was set at $1.5 million, and the report said his arraignment was continued with a new court date still to be announced.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
