MUSKOGEE, OK — An 11-year-old girl in Muskogee County gave birth at home over the weekend, sparking a child neglect investigation that local officials say has horrified the community and exposed deep gaps in oversight and care.
According to Muskogee County Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson, the girl was taken to a local hospital Saturday after delivering a full-term infant without any medical assistance.
Hospital staff immediately contacted authorities, prompting an investigation that led to the arrest of the girl’s mother, Cherie Walker, and her stepfather, Dustin Walker, KJRH reported.
Both are currently held at the Muskogee County Jail on $100,000 bond each, facing charges of child neglect. Additional charges are expected.
“I was horror-stricken to find out it’s an 11-year-old little girl who’s given birth,” Hutson told KJRH. “And that she had no medical care, and she had no one to be with her.”
As reported by KWTV, authorities believe the child had not seen a doctor in over a year. Investigators also noted that she was not enrolled in school, a detail Hutson said may have prevented educators or medical professionals from spotting the signs of pregnancy. “The child had been out of school for a period of time, and it is my understanding that children may have been homeschooled,” she explained.
Both adults reportedly claimed they were unaware the child was pregnant. Hutson, however, is skeptical. She described the girl as “rather petite” and said the newborn was a normal-sized infant.
“This child is traumatized. She’s been through a horrific ordeal,” Hutson said. “I mean, not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance, and this will be her life for the rest of her life.”
The girl and her siblings have been removed from the home. A DNA test is pending to identify the baby’s father — a process that could take up to two weeks. In the meantime, the community is grappling with the revelations.
Next-door neighbor Cheryl Adkins told KJRH she had repeatedly alerted authorities to conditions at the Walkers’ home, describing it as unsafe and unsanitary. “They have no running water for the last two or three years,” Adkins said. “They have dogs in the house. They have cats in the house, six children.” She fears her warnings went unheard and that the child’s trauma might have been preventable. “They robbed her of her childhood,” she said.
While neighbors express outrage, some family members are pushing back against public judgment.
The girl’s grandmother, who identified herself only as Michelle, told KJRH she and others in the family were unaware of the pregnancy. “I just want people to know, we did not know this was happening. None of us,” she said.
“They’ve made my daughter and my son-in-law a monster,” Michelle added. “They are not. They love those children. They love them.”
Michelle defended the condition of the home, attributing the mess to pets. “We have animals, and so sometimes there’s trash on the floor because the dogs get into the trash,” she said. “It gets cleaned up. Right now, it’s probably a mess because the animals are in there.”
As for the identity of the baby’s father, Michelle said the 11-year-old claimed it was a 12-year-old boy she used to babysit. “They got curious. That’s all I know,” she said.
Hutson emphasized that while the case is difficult, pursuing justice is paramount — not only for the child, but to prevent similar tragedies.
“I want people to know that there are resources available,” she said. “Reach out to law enforcement, the Department of Human Services, or the district attorney’s office when you see something that may be abuse or neglect.”
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
