NIBLEY, UT — A Cache County couple has been jailed on suspicion of aggravated murder and child abuse after investigators determined their 18‑month‑old daughter died in March from severe neglect.
Mitchell Chesnut Murray and Carrie Marie Murray, both 31, were booked into the Cache County Jail for investigation of the felonies, as per KSL.
The Cache County Sheriff’s Office alleges that the Murrays showed “a depraved indifference to human life, and knowingly engaged in conduct that created a grave risk of death” and “thereby causing her death by failing to provide her with the appropriate nutrition and hydration.”
Ruby Marie Murray died on March 19, weighing about 17 pounds at the time of her death. Her mother told police she found the toddler deceased in her crib, according to a police booking affidavit.
The findings of the medical examiner confirmed the infant died due to complications arising from malnutrition and dehydration, the sheriff’s office said.
As emergency crews responded, 911 dispatchers tried to instruct Carrie Murray on performing life-saving efforts. “Carrie informed dispatch that she was a nurse and she believed the child to be beyond help,” the affidavit states.
Paramedics who arrived told police they believed rigor mortis had already begun to set in.
The sheriff’s office stated that follow-up investigative steps identified a severe pattern of neglect leading up to the infant’s death.
Investigators reviewed baby monitor and surveillance camera footage from Ruby’s room covering the final four days of her life. During those 96 hours, she was only removed from her crib for a little more than six hours, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The total time another human being was identified as being present with the child was 49 minutes and 15 seconds,” the sheriff’s office stated.
Investigators also identified just six diaper changes during that four-day period.
Mitchell Murray, who told police he works from home and often spends time on his computer playing games, described what he called “crib days.” He claimed these were days where Ruby remained in her crib all day while he worked and he checked on her two or three times during the day, the affidavit alleges.
However, a review of footage from March 16 showed Ruby was allowed out of the crib for four hours and forty-four minutes. The majority of that time she was left alone on her bedroom floor, according to the affidavit.
The total interaction Mitchell, Carrie, and their four-year-old son had with Ruby on March 16 was nine minutes and forty-two seconds, the affidavit says.
On March 17, Ruby was out of her crib for about five minutes for two diaper changes for the entire day, the affidavit states.
On the day before she died, March 18, investigators said the child was never taken out of her crib. The total human interaction with Ruby on that day was forty-nine seconds, and her diaper was never changed.
In a second interview, Carrie Murray allegedly admitted that she and Mitchell Murray interacted with Ruby even less during the previous autumn. She also stated they only bathed her about once a week.
According to KUTV, Carrie Murray told investigators that Ruby was provided a sippy cup twice a day, and was usually fed waffles for her meals. She allegedly said Ruby ate in her crib because the family was “not table people” and Ruby didn’t like someone feeding her, the affidavit says.
KSL reported that Carrie Murray admitted to not viewing the baby monitor app in months, according to investigators.
Deputies noted that the child’s crib was in a bedroom with a space heater running, set to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and was warmer than the rest of the home, according to the affidavit.
The toddler’s crib was found littered with sippy cups and pieces of waffles. Underneath the mattress was trash, wrappers, and more pieces of food, the affidavit says.
Detectives who watched the surveillance footage also noticed that Ruby was unable to differentiate night from day and “did not exhibit normal sleeping patterns.”
Loud rock or pop music, typically Green Day and Fall Out Boy, was played through an Amazon Alexa in the child’s room. The loud music appeared to interfere with her ability to sleep at times, according to the affidavit.
Carrie Murray stated that Ruby needed music to sleep and it would typically be played all night.
In Utah, aggravated murder is a capital felony which carries a possible sentence of death, life without parole, or a minimum of twenty-five years to life in prison.
Aggravated child abuse is a first-degree felony, which is punishable by five years to life in prison.
Mitchell and Carrie Murray remain in the Cache County Jail pending formal charges.
The custody status of the Murrays’ 4-year-old son is unknown.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
