Tallahassee, FL — Federal authorities announced the recovery of 43 critically missing children in Florida during a two-week operation in December led by the U.S. Marshals Service.
The initiative, called Operation Northern Lights, involved more than 80 personnel from 25 agencies and resulted in nine arrests, officials announced on Dec. 18.
The U.S. Marshals Service defines “critically missing” children as those believed to be at heightened risk of violence or other dangers. The children recovered ranged in age from 18 months to 17 years, People magazine reported.
According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Florida has high rates of reported missing children cases.
Greg Leljedal, acting U.S. marshal for the Northern District of Florida, called the mission unprecedented in scope. “This was the most successful missing child operation ever conducted in Northern Florida,” he said.
Leljedal credited the cooperation among agencies for the outcome. “Because of the tireless dedication of the U.S. Marshals and our law enforcement partners, 43 endangered children will now be home safe for the holidays,” he said.
Among the most notable recoveries was a 1-year-old missing from Leon County, who was located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The child had been listed as missing since September. The recovery was made through joint efforts by U.S. Marshals in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, WAFB reported.
Other recoveries included a 17-year-old and a 1-year-old missing from Okaloosa County, who were found outside Jackson, Mississippi. Authorities said an arrest was made for interference with child custody in that case.
A 17-year-old missing from Suwannee County was found in Meadville, Mississippi. Authorities also located a 13-year-old from the county who had been missing for eight months in Jacksonville, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
A 15-year-old abducted by a non-custodial adult was also found in Ocala, Florida, with the adult taken into custody.
Authorities said the children recovered were placed in protective custody. Details about individual cases were not released, citing privacy concerns.
Federal officials said 20 of the recovered children were identified as potential victims of human trafficking. These children are now receiving services from state social workers and specialized advocacy groups.
Investigators used social media monitoring and interviews with family members to identify leads. The U.S. Marshals Service reported that some of the children were found in other states after leaving Florida, according to People magazine.
Law enforcement officers arrested nine individuals during the monthlong period. The suspects face charges including interference with custody and possession of child pornography, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Operation Northern Lights required coordination across multiple states. The U.S. Marshals Service said the mission was resource-intensive, involving surveillance, interviews, and cooperation with local jurisdictions, as per People magazine.
Since 2005, the U.S. Marshals Service has located more than 2,000 missing children nationwide. Operation Northern Lights was the latest large-scale recovery effort in the Southeast region, according to official statements.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
