CALLAHAN, FL — Four adults are behind bars after authorities say a one-year-old child ingested methamphetamine from a sippy cup inside a Callahan home, triggering an investigation that uncovered drug paraphernalia throughout the residence.
According to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, Hayden Simmons, Damien Windham, Erica Foley and Judith Addison were each charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm following the incident. All four are described as permanent residents of the home.
The case began Tuesday, Feb. 24, when detectives were notified by the Florida Department of Children and Families that the toddler had ingested methamphetamine the day before, according to the sheriff’s office.
During their investigation, detectives learned the child had been drinking from a sippy cup that the parents later discovered contained a bag at the bottom. A resident of the home confirmed the bag contained methamphetamine, authorities said.
Despite realizing the child may have been exposed to the drug, neither the parents nor other residents called 911, according to the sheriff’s office. Instead, they monitored the toddler overnight. When the child began vomiting, the mother took the toddler to a nearby fire station. The child was later admitted to a local hospital for treatment of a possible overdose.
Sheriff Bill Leeper called the circumstances both tragic and avoidable.
“This is a heartbreaking and completely preventable situation. A one-year-old child was exposed to a dangerous, illegal drug because the adults in that home failed to provide even the most basic level of care and protection,” Leeper said. “There is absolutely no excuse for methamphetamine to be within reach of a child.”
Detectives later executed a search warrant at the home, where they located drug paraphernalia, including several glass pipes and containers with methamphetamine residue, according to the sheriff’s office.
Simmons and Windham were each issued bonds of more than $25,000 on the child neglect charge, authorities said. Foley’s bond was set at more than $10,000 on the neglect charge, and she faces an additional charge of possession of drug paraphernalia with an added bond of more than $2,500. Addison’s bond was set at more than $5,000.
All four were booked into the Nassau County Jail & Detention Center, according to the sheriff’s office.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
