BLOUNT COUNTY, AL — An Alabama man is facing multiple criminal charges after authorities say he crashed a motorcycle while intoxicated, seriously injuring an 18-month-old child who was riding with him without a helmet.

According to court documents cited by WVTM, Aaron Lee Roberson, 32, of Oneonta, was operating a motorcycle on Saturday, Feb. 14, while under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly on a paved road. Records allege Roberson was speeding before ultimately wrecking the motorcycle.

The toddler, who was on the motorcycle at the time, suffered serious injuries to the head and face, according to court records. Authorities said neither Roberson nor the child was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Investigators say Roberson’s actions did not end with the wreck. According to WBRC, court records indicate he did not call 911 after the crash and left the scene without notifying law enforcement that the accident had occurred. WVTM further reports that officials said Roberson left the scene with others and failed to render reasonable assistance to the injured child.

Roberson has been charged with second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident with injury, reckless endangerment and reckless driving, according to court documents. He is being held in the Blount County Jail on a $37,000 bond, WVTM reported.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
