NICHOLLS, GA — A police chief in southeast Georgia has been arrested and charged with multiple felony offenses after allegedly sending sexually explicit text messages to a 15-year-old girl while on duty.

Ashley Wilson, 40, Chief of Police for the Nicholls Police Department, was taken into custody without incident on Thursday, June 19, and is currently being held in the Coffee County Jail, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The GBI said in a statement released Friday that Wilson is charged with three counts of enticing a child for indecent purposes, one count of criminal attempt to commit child molestation, and violation of oath of office.

Investigators say the victim’s mother discovered inappropriate text messages on her daughter’s phone and reported them to a Nicholls police officer. That officer, in turn, escalated the matter to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, which requested assistance from the GBI.

According to the GBI, the messages revealed that Wilson sent messages “where he talked about wanting to have a sexual relationship with [the victim].”

Investigators noted that many of the texts were sent while Wilson was on duty as the city’s police chief.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
