MATTHEWS, NC — A North Carolina man was taken into custody Thursday after a tense standoff involving his wife and four children, following allegations of domestic violence and false imprisonment.
According to the Matthews Police Department, officers were dispatched around 4:37 p.m. on September 25 to the 1700 block of Chambers Drive in response to a domestic disturbance call, the department reported in a media release Friday.
When officers arrived, they encountered a woman outside the home who had visible physical injuries. She told officers her husband had assaulted her and was holding her inside the home against her will.
According to Matthews Police, the woman also said that her husband, identified as 44-year-old Tyrone Derrick Jenkins, was still inside the home with their four children. Police later confirmed Jenkins had two active felony warrants for his arrest.
While officers were still speaking with the woman, Jenkins briefly stepped outside the home but quickly retreated inside and locked the door—leaving the children inside, authorities stated. Officers immediately called for backup, establishing a perimeter and preparing for what would become an hours-long standoff.
According to the department’s report, the Special Response Team (SRT) was activated, and crisis negotiators began attempts to contact Jenkins. After engaging with police over the phone, Jenkins ultimately agreed to let the four children out of the house safely, reuniting them with their mother, officials said.
Negotiators continued speaking with Jenkins, urging him to surrender peacefully. Those efforts, however, proved unsuccessful. Police said that as the SRT prepared to enter the home to make an arrest, Jenkins emerged but refused to follow officers’ commands.
“At that point,” the Matthews Police Department reported, “officers deployed a non-lethal disorientation device better known as a ‘Flashbang.’” The deployment prompted Jenkins to surrender immediately, and he was taken into custody without injury.
Jenkins was transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail, where he faces multiple charges, including four counts of false imprisonment, four counts of misdemeanor child abuse, misdemeanor domestic violence, and resisting a public officer.
No injuries were reported during the standoff or arrest, according to police.
