VENTURA, CA — A Ventura man is facing attempted murder and kidnapping charges after investigators said he attacked a woman he had been with at a downtown bar, drove her to a remote area near Santa Paula, and threatened to kill her before she escaped.

Ventura police said the woman arrived at department headquarters shortly after 10 p.m. on July 25 with significant injuries, and the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said Ignacio Rafael Anzaldo III, 33, was later charged with multiple felonies tied to the attack.

According to investigators, the woman and Anzaldo had been together at a bar in downtown Ventura before leaving in a vehicle. Police said he became angry, began physically attacking her, and threatened her life as he drove to Wheeler Canyon Road in Santa Paula.

Authorities said Anzaldo then told the woman he was going to kill her, pulled a knife, and cut her. A nearby resident heard the commotion and intervened, police said, interrupting the attack and allowing the woman to flee before she made her way to the police department and was taken to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment.

Anzaldo was arrested without incident and booked into the Ventura County Jail. Prosecutors said he is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, corporal injury to a spouse, and two counts of criminal threats, along with two misdemeanor counts of destroying evidence and a deadly weapon allegation.

District Attorney officials said Anzaldo made his first court appearance on July 28 and remains in custody with bail set at $1 million. His arraignment was continued to August 12 at 9 a.m. in courtroom 37 of Ventura County Superior Court, and police said the investigation remains ongoing.
