SEMMES, AL — A 24-year-old man remained critically injured after being shot four times during a confrontation involving his mother and her former boyfriend, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said James Agee intervened after 48-year-old Christopher Shires chased Agee’s mother into the street following their breakup, according to WKRG’s reporting. The shooting happened around 10:04 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, in the 6000 block of Cynthia Drive in Semmes.

Sgt. Lonnie Parsons told the station that the woman had recently ended her relationship with Shires. Investigators said Agee heard what was happening, confronted Shires and became involved in a physical struggle with him.

Shires then grabbed a gun and shot Agee four times at point-blank range, investigators said. Deputies found Agee in the roadway with gunshot wounds to his torso and extremities.

After shooting Agee, Shires returned to the home and shot himself on the back porch, Parsons said. Deputies found him there with a single gunshot wound. Both men were taken to a hospital, where Shires later died.

Parsons said the home had a history of domestic violence issues. WKRG’s report did not detail those earlier incidents or identify any previous charges, protective orders or official responses.

The sergeant urged people experiencing domestic violence to contact the sheriff’s office or other resources for help. He said deputies could help connect people with assistance.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 29, Agee remained in critical condition. His family told WKRG he was still in the intensive care unit; the report provided no later update on his condition.
