DALLAS, TX — Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail after testing positive for marijuana in violation of the terms of his probation in a Dallas crash case that injured multiple people.
According to the Associated Press report published by ClickOnDetroit, Texas prosecutors said Tuesday that Rice was required to begin serving the jail term that had been built into the sentence from his guilty plea last July.
Rice pleaded guilty to third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. As part of that plea agreement, prosecutors said he received five years of deferred probation and a 30-day jail term as a condition of probation.
The probation violation was triggered after Rice tested positive for marijuana, according to the Texas State Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said the underlying case stemmed from a March 30, 2024 crash on North Central Expressway in Dallas. They alleged Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus at 119 mph and made multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic before striking other vehicles.
Authorities also said Rice failed to check on the people in the other vehicles after the crash and instead fled the scene on foot.
The Chiefs declined to comment Tuesday, and a message sent to Rice’s attorney was not immediately returned, according to the report.
The timing could affect the NFL offseason calendar. Because the jail term lands during organized team activities and minicamp season, the 26-year-old may miss key spring work with Kansas City.
Rice had previously said at training camp before last season that he had changed after the crash and had learned from the experience. He was also suspended for six games under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
His court-ordered jail time now adds another consequence to a case that has continued to follow one of the Chiefs’ top offensive players.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
