JUPITER ISLAND, FL — Tiger Woods was arrested and charged with DUI and causing property damage March 27 after his vehicle clipped a trailer and overturned, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on the northbound lanes of South Beach Road. Woods, 50, also faces a charge of refusal to submit to a lawful test, as reported by PEOPLE.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said during a press conference that Woods was driving a Land Rover at a high speed behind a pickup truck. The driver of the truck, which was pulling a trailer with a pressure cleaner, attempted to pull over to avoid the SUV.

Woods allegedly struck the back of the trailer. The impact caused the Land Rover to roll onto the driver’s side door and slide down the pavement.

No injuries were reported in the collision. Budensiek said Woods was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Woods was able to exit the SUV without assistance. However, Budensiek alleged that Woods appeared lethargic and showed signs of impairment at the scene.

Deputies placed Woods under arrest and transported him to the Martin County Jail. According to Budensiek, Woods took a Breathalyzer test and “blew triple zeroes,” indicating he had not consumed alcohol.

Authorities believe Woods was impaired by medication or other substances. Budensiek said Woods refused to provide a urine sample for further testing.

Investigators did not find drugs or alcohol inside the vehicle. During the investigation, Woods told deputies about his history of injuries and previous surgeries.

Budensiek said the agency took that information into account during the arrest. The speed limit on South Beach Road is 30 mph.

While investigators have not released a specific speed for the Land Rover, Budensiek said photos of the scene showed the distance the vehicle slid after the rollover. A photo published by WPTV showed the vehicle resting on its side.

According to ESPN, Woods lives in the area where the crash took place. The golfer will be held in a section of the jail apart from the general population to prevent harm, Budensiek said.

The sheriff stated that Woods will face standard legal consequences and will not receive preferential treatment due to his celebrity status. Budensiek said the law applies to everyone regardless of their public profile.

The Friday incident is the latest in a series of vehicle crashes involving the golfer over the last 17 years. In February 2021, Woods was involved in a rollover accident in Los Angeles County. During that incident, Woods struck a sign and crossed a center divider before hitting a tree. His vehicle sustained heavy damage and came to a rest in the brush.

Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics had to pull Woods from the wreckage. He underwent emergency surgery for orthopedic injuries to his right leg. The Los Angeles County Sheriff said at the time that Woods was conscious and there was no evidence of impairment. No charges were filed in the 2021 crash.

In 2017, Woods was arrested on a DUI charge in Florida. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving.

Woods was released on bail later Friday evening. Under Florida law, individuals arrested for DUI must spend a minimum of eight hours in jail before posting bail.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
