BROOKLYN, NY — Police say an 18-year-old from New Jersey has been charged after a chaotic early Sunday shooting in Crown Heights that ended with Detective Robert Karroll shot in the back when fellow officers opened fire at the suspect.
According to reporting from PIX11 and other New York outlets, authorities identified the suspect as Camani Bartletto, 18, of West Orange, New Jersey. Police said the confrontation unfolded around 4:15 a.m. after officers in an unmarked SUV encountered the teen while he was armed with a 9mm handgun.
Public reporting said surveillance video showed the suspect outside a Nostrand Avenue deli shortly before the shooting. Investigators said he pointed the gun at a man, went inside the store, then came back out and fired at a passing Uber. No one in that vehicle was struck.
Police said the suspect then moved toward the unmarked NYPD vehicle with the weapon visible. Three officers opened fire, missing the suspect but hitting Karroll in the back. Officials said the detective’s ballistic vest prevented more serious injuries, and he was later released from the hospital. Another female officer suffered minor injuries.
Karroll was described in local coverage as a father of three who was only days away from retirement. Authorities said the suspect fled and was arrested several blocks away after resisting.
Bartletto now faces attempted murder, weapons possession, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief charges, according to the reports. Investigators have said the detective appears to have been struck by friendly fire, though the review of the shooting remains ongoing.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
