NORTH SALT LAKE, UT — A 36-year-old parolee was arrested Wednesday after police say he shot a man twice in the abdomen outside a North Salt Lake trailer park community last week following a confrontation near the victim’s home.
Investigators say the shooting happened Friday, Aug. 21, after the victim confronted the man, later identified as Ammon Michael Etherington, when he returned to the area in a red GMC Jimmy. According to reporting by ABC4 and additional case details published by KSL, the victim had already told Etherington to leave the area after Etherington dropped off the victim’s ex-girlfriend for a visit with their shared children.
Police say Etherington initially handed over a bag and a pair of shoes for the victim to give to the woman, then left. But when the victim was heading to work later that morning, he spotted Etherington’s vehicle back near the property and confronted him again, and police allege Etherington pulled out a handgun and opened fire.
The victim survived but suffered two gunshot wounds to the abdomen, according to investigators. Officers later interviewed the ex-girlfriend, who identified Etherington and told police she had asked him not to remain near the home because it would create problems if the victim saw him there.
Etherington was booked for investigation of attempted murder, aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, and prohibited weapon conduct. Police also said he was on parole at the time of the shooting for prior aggravated burglary convictions.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
