DALLAS, TX — Three-year-old Amazi Aplon died after an early-morning shooting at an Oak Cliff apartment complex, leaving neighbors mourning a child as investigators worked to establish how he was shot.

Officers responded around 1 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, to Oakwood Place Apartments on Wadsworth Drive, according to FOX 4. Police said they began lifesaving efforts before paramedics arrived. Aplon died after being taken to a hospital.

The complex is near Loop 12 and Interstate 45. NBC 5 reported that officers found the child unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound.

CBS Texas reported that officers at the scene said the boy’s mother told them another toddler in the home had obtained a gun and fired it. Officers also told the station they were questioning her. That account was attributed to the mother, not presented here as an independently established finding.

FOX 4 reported that police contacted Child Protective Services and took Aplon’s mother in for questioning. Its report said authorities were still determining who fired the weapon and that no charges had been announced. Dallas police separately told NBC 5 that the shooting’s motives and circumstances remained under investigation.

Neighbors who told NBC 5 they knew the family recalled seeing the children playing outside. One said they had been outside the previous day. Another wanted investigators to establish what happened.

Neighbor Bernard William Shabad told FOX 4 that the death renewed his frustration with gun violence and his concerns about children’s safety.

Source note: The queued KENS5 report could not be retrieved. Its supplied summary mentions a Cook Children’s doctor urging safe gun storage, but the doctor’s remarks could not be independently checked. That appeal does not establish how this shooting occurred.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
