A South Carolina woman is behind bars on murder charges for allegedly shooting her estranged husband on Sunday.

According to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, Dr. Jennifer Kerri Ray is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The Augusta Press reported deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a home in the 1000 block of Prides Crossing in Aiken, South Carolina, at 5 p.m. on December 1.

Deputies entered the home and discovered Greg Baughman lying on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds. Nearby, they found several spent bullet casings, along with a black handgun on the kitchen counter.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office pronounced Baughman dead at 6:30 p.m.

According to arrest warrant documents, Ray shot Baughman “multiple times in the back and multiple times while he was lying on the floor.”

The couple had reportedly been separated for a period of time, and that Baughman filed for divorce shortly before the shooting.

According to civil court documents obtained by WFXG, the separation officially began on August 29, 2024, and Baughman filed for legal separation two months later. Ray subsequently sought a court order to prevent either party from “selling, mortgaging, hiding, disposing of, or depleting any marital assets.”

Ray’s attorney stated during a court appearance on Monday afternoon that Ray had been a victim of domestic abuse and required hospitalization for injuries sustained the previous month. Ray explained that she had not pressed charges earlier because of her husband’s military career, fearing the allegations could jeopardize his career.

Ray is currently being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 14.

Ray and Baughman owned the Hitchcock Animal Hospital together in Aiken, according to the hospital’s website.

Animal hospital staff made a statement via Facebook on Monday:

According to WFXG, one person was injured in an April 2024 shooting outside the animal hospital; however, there are no known suspects in the shooting.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
