A Maryland woman is behind bars for allegedly drowning her infant daughter in a bathtub.
According to the Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division, detectives arrested and charged 37-year-old Mackenzie Rose Colgan, in connection to the murder of her three-month-old daughter on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
Police say the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received a call around 12:12 p.m. from Colgan claiming she had drowned their infant while giving the baby a bath.
Police officers and Fire Rescue Personnel responded to the 7300 block of Summit Avenue. The infant was transported to a local hospital where additional life-saving measures were attempted, but the infant was ultimately pronounced dead.
Major Crimes detectives responded to the scene, and during the investigation, Colgan was identified as the suspect, police said.
According to court records, Colgan took the baby girl upstairs to bathe her just after 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. About 20 minutes later, Colgan returned downstairs and claimed the baby was dead. The child’s father immediately instructed Colgan to call 911 and rushed upstairs to perform CPR on the baby.
In an interview with detectives, Colgan reportedly confessed that she had woken up that morning intending to “end everything” — planning to kill both her children and her husband, according to Crime Online.
Colgan stated that after taking the infant upstairs, she filled a baby bath with water and placed it in a larger tub. She then turned the baby to face away from her and held the child’s head under the water until she knew the baby was dead, according to police records.
Colgan further stated that she then went to a bedroom with the intention of jumping out of a window. However, upon reaching the ledge, she changed her mind and went downstairs, where she admitted to her husband what she had done.
Colgan is scheduled to undergo a mental health evaluation before her first court appearance.
