A retired Detroit police officer is accused of fatally shooting his tenant during a dispute on Tuesday afternoon.

According to WXYZ, the incident took place around 2 p.m. in Detroit, Michigan.

Police believe the altercation stemmed from an ongoing eviction.

Sources told WXYZ that the tenant made threatening statements, prompting the landlord to demand the tenant show his hands. Fearing the tenant was reaching for a weapon, the landlord, a man in his 50s, shot the tenant, a man in his 40s, multiple times.

Authorities later confirmed that the tenant was unarmed.

The landlord, who holds a concealed pistol license, was taken into custody, and his weapon was recovered at the scene.

No charges have been filed as of Wednesday.

Police said officers had earlier visited the property to serve the eviction notice.

Court records show the two had been involved in a legal dispute since August, with an eviction notice filed in early November.
