AMITE, LA — A Louisiana man is behind bars for allegedly killing two young family members and his sister.
According to the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Department, 31-year-old Ryant Jones was arrested on three counts of first degree murder in connection with the deaths of two children and an adult on January 9, 2025.
Police said they responded to a domestic disturbance call around 4:39 a.m. at 1599 Sawmill Road, in Amite, LA, which resulted in the death of three victims; one 40-year-old female, her 10-year-old son, and her one-year-old nephew, who were apparently stabbed to death.
The victims were Rhonda Powell, her son Braylon, and her nephew Hayden, according to a GoFundMe page.
The GoFundMe explained the “unimaginable act of violence,” and said the person accused is a family member who has a documented history of schizophrenia and was experiencing a mental health episode. Just the day before, he had been brought to a medical center for help and was prescribed new medication.
Adding to the family’s pain, the victim’s mother-who is usually at home and “may have been able to intervene”-was in the hospital awaiting heart surgery at the time of the incident, the fundraiser said.
“This was a horrible tragedy,” Sheriff Clay Chutz said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims family, all the first responders that worked this tragedy, and the entire community.”
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
