BAYTOWN, TX — Authorities have arrested a Texas man for the alleged murder of his spouse, who was reportedly an undocumented immigrant.
Ty Vaughn, 31, was arrested on murder charges on Saturday in the death of 27-year-old Luis Banos Norberto.
The incident occurred on January 14 at an apartment complex in Baytown, Texas, near Houston.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by KTRK, Vaughn is accused of shooting Norberto in the face and then attempting to manipulate the crime scene to make it appear as though Norberto had taken his own life.
An arrest affidavit revealed Vaughn initially claimed he returned home shortly after 5:30 a.m. to find Norberto dead. However, surveillance footage and witness accounts contradicted this, showing that Vaughn arrived at the apartment around 4 a.m. Neighbors reported hearing a gunshot shortly after his arrival.
While Norberto lay deceased, Vaughn allegedly sent a text to him around 4:30 a.m., asking, “Babe? Babe why are you not texting back?!?!” Law enforcement noted that he did not call 911 until after 5:30 a.m., approximately 90 minutes after the shooting.
In the 911 call, he reportedly stated, “My spouse is dead. Help. My life is over.”
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Norberto’s body on a bed, with a lever-action rifle placed against his arm and a torn photograph of the couple nearby.
Detectives said Vaughn frequently referred to Norberto’s immigration status during questioning.
According to police, a search of Vaughn’s phone revealed a Google search for the phrase, “Can I kill an illegal human?”
Vaughn was arrested on Saturday and is currently held at the Harris County Jail with a bond set at $500,000.
Norberto’s obituary indicated he was born in Guerrero, Mexico, but the immediate family members are listed as residents of Baytown.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
