VALDOSTA, GA — A 2-year-old boy is dead after a brutal dog attack that police say unfolded while he was left unattended for hours at an unlicensed daycare in Georgia.
The child, identified as Kaimir Jones, had been dropped off at the home of 48-year-old Stacy Wheeler Cobb on Saturday, where authorities now say a series of negligent decisions led to his death, according to CBS News Atlanta.
According to Valdosta police, emergency crews responded to a distress call at Cobb’s residence on the 3800 block of Pecan Drive around 3:45 p.m. They arrived to a harrowing scene: the toddler had been mauled to death in the backyard by two Rottweilers.
As reported by CBS News Atlanta, investigators believe Kaimir wandered outside while Cobb was asleep, opened a kennel containing the dogs, and was fatally attacked.
Cobb, who has since been arrested, told detectives she had assumed the child was asleep when she lay down for a nap earlier that afternoon.
According to WSB-TV, she was the only adult present at the time, and Kaimir was the only child in her care that day — though she reportedly watches up to ten children regularly, despite operating without a license.
Authorities say Kaimir had been left unsupervised for over two hours. During that time, he managed to exit the home, reach the backyard, and unlock the kennel housing the Rottweilers. Police believe the dogs escaped and attacked the child almost immediately. When Cobb finally discovered what had happened, it was too late.
“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred,” said Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan, speaking to CBS News Atlanta. “No words will ever ease their pain, but our hearts go out to [Kaimir’s family] during this unimaginably difficult time.”
WALB reports that Cobb now faces multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children. Police say more charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
Kaimir’s mother, Adrianna Jones, is demanding accountability. “My baby needs justice,” she said tearfully in an interview with WALB. “Please promise me to keep my baby’s name alive—he deserves it.” Her family, including Kaimir’s grandparents, echoed the call, warning other parents to carefully verify childcare providers. “We trusted someone to protect him, not put him in harm’s way,” said his grandfather.
Valdosta officials are urging families to check daycare credentials through the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning before entrusting caregivers with their children.
As noted by WSB-TV, Cobb was booked into the Lowndes County Jail. Animal control officers have since removed the two Rottweilers involved in the attack, along with a third dog found on the property.
In a message on a GoFundMe page, Adrianna Jones shared what she saw upon arriving at Cobb’s home: “This was a heartbreaking, devastating and traumatizing scene that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I found my baby like this.”
The case remains under active investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Valdosta Police Department or leave an anonymous tip with CrimeStoppers.
