LOUISVILLE, KY — A 28-year-old Navy veteran is dead after police say she stepped in to protect others during an argument that escalated into gunfire outside a downtown Louisville McDonald’s.

Louisville Metro Police arrested Shoshanha Jones on Tuesday in connection with the Dec. 31 shooting near East Market Street in the NuLu area. Jones is charged with murder, first-degree robbery and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, according to WDRB.

The shooting was reported around 10:30 p.m. in the 400 block of East Market Street, near the intersection of North Preston and South Jackson streets, according to police. Officers arrived to find Mayra Alejandra Rodríguez Muñoz suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. EMS pronounced her dead at the scene, police said.

Court documents indicate the incident began when a child was getting out of a vehicle and the door struck Jones’ car. According to police, Jones began yelling at the child. The child returned to the vehicle, where Rodríguez Muñoz was seated. Investigators say Rodríguez Muñoz attempted to redirect Jones’ attention away from the child and toward herself.

Police said Jones retrieved a handgun as Rodríguez Muñoz exited the vehicle in an effort to intervene. That was when Jones fired a single shot, striking Rodríguez Muñoz in the chest, according to court records.

Another woman at the scene was attempting to record the confrontation on her phone, police said. Investigators allege Jones then pointed the gun at her, forcibly took the phone and fled the area.

Jones was identified as a suspect after police found her identification card on the ground near spent shell casings, according to WLKY. Police later confirmed Jones is a convicted felon and legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Jones is being held at Metro Corrections on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning, according to jail and court records.

The victim, 28-year-old Mayra Alejandra Rodríguez Muñoz, was a U.S. Navy veteran who served as a Seabee Builder Second Class with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Eleven, according to her obituary. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, she later lived in Milwaukee before enlisting in the Navy in 2017. She served on active duty until her honorable discharge in 2022 and had recently relocated to Louisville to begin her civilian life.

Her brother posted on Facebook that Rodríguez Muñoz “passed after conducting a heroic act while protecting someone else’s life.”

He added, “I’m extremely proud of my sister and all the lives she’s touching still until this day and all the days to come. We have all veterans and active duty made an oath to protect and defend the nation from any threat foreign and domestic. She definitely understood and demonstrated that with her incredible courage.”

Her obituary notes she will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove, Wisconsin.

Rodríguez Muñoz earned multiple military commendations during her service, including two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and the Good Conduct Medal, and was recognized for leadership responsibilities beyond her rank, according to her obituary. Family members described her as compassionate, creative and deeply devoted to protecting others, traits they say were evident in her final moments.

The investigation remains ongoing.
