PROVO, UT — Newly unsealed court records allege Tyler Robinson wrote in a handwritten letter that he had the “opportunity” to kill Charlie Kirk before the conservative activist was fatally shot at Utah Valley University in 2025.
People reported that the search-warrant materials describe a note Robinson allegedly left under his keyboard for his partner on the morning of the shooting.
According to the affidavit, Robinson texted his partner to “drop what you are doing” and look under the keyboard, where investigators later found a letter saying he had left home “on a mission” and was likely dead or facing a lengthy prison sentence.
According to the newly unsealed filing, the note stated, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it,” before adding that Robinson did not know whether he had succeeded and wished he could have returned home.
Authorities said Kirk was shot on Sept. 10, 2025, while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Robinson allegedly fled, triggering a manhunt, then surrendered to authorities the following night.
According to court records and prior charging documents, Robinson is charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child.
Law enforcement officers also seized ammunition, computers, a DNA sample, and a copy of the note during the investigation, according to KUTV. Robinson’s next court appearance is set for April 17, when attorneys are expected to argue over courtroom camera access.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
