ANNANDALE, Va. — Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, 47, fatally shot his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, 49, multiple times in their basement early Thursday morning before going upstairs to the couple’s primary bedroom and killing himself with the same firearm, Fairfax County police said.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said officers were dispatched just after midnight to the 8100 block of Guinevere Drive after the couple’s teenage son called 911 following the gunfire. According to FOX 5 DC and the Associated Press, the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute connected to the couple’s ongoing divorce. The couple had separated in 2024 and filed for divorce in 2025 but continued living together in the same home. Both of the couple’s children were inside at the time and were not physically harmed.
Investigators said Cerina Fairfax had installed security cameras throughout the home during the separation. In January 2026, Justin Fairfax called police claiming his wife had assaulted him, but detectives reviewed the footage and determined no assault had occurred. A report was filed, but no arrests were made.
Davis said Fairfax had recently been served with paperwork related to an upcoming court appearance in the divorce case. “That may have been a spark — detectives will figure that out — that led to this tragedy,” the chief said. Davis described Fairfax as a former “rising star politically” and called the shooting a tragic “fall from grace.”
The couple met as undergraduates at Duke University and married in 2006. Cerina Fairfax ran a family dentistry practice; she attended the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry and was named its most outstanding alumna of the past decade in 2015. Justin Fairfax had returned to practicing law following his term as lieutenant governor.
Fairfax, a Democrat who served as Virginia’s 41st lieutenant governor beginning in 2018, was briefly positioned as a potential successor to Gov. Ralph Northam in 2019 when Northam became embroiled in a scandal over a racist photo on his medical school yearbook page. That path ended when two women publicly accused Fairfax of sexual assault — allegations he denied. Meredith Watson, who attended Duke University with Fairfax, said he raped her in 2000. Vanessa Tyson, a California professor, said Fairfax forced her to perform oral sex in his hotel room during the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, when he was a Columbia Law School student serving as an aide to Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards. Fairfax insisted both encounters were consensual and refused calls to resign.
The sexual assault allegations led to Fairfax’s resignation as a partner at a prominent law firm. Court filings revealed the IRS had also filed a lien against the couple for more than $91,000 in unpaid taxes, a debt that was resolved in 2021.
Davis said the department’s foremost concern is the welfare of the Fairfax children. “It’s very sad for this community,” Davis said. “A lot of people who know the Fairfax family — everybody’s shocked. We’re shocked.”
Virginia’s Democratic U.S. senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, issued a joint statement: “We are keeping Cerina and Justin Fairfax’s family — especially their two children — in our prayers as we all process this shocking and horrifying news.” Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi called the deaths devastating. “Along with so many in the Commonwealth, I am filled with sorrow; I await further insights from our law enforcement officials,” Hashmi said.
