COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Damian Strozier, the suspect at the center of a police search in Cobb County, was shot and killed by officers at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Authorities had been searching for Strozier after police said he pointed a gun at officers when they tried to arrest him earlier Tuesday, prompting officers to fire before he ran off and triggered a manhunt. Strozier had been accused in the death of a 67-year-old woman who investigators say was struck last month by a man riding an electric scooter in Atlanta. Police say the rider left the scene, and the woman later died from her injuries.
According to WSB-TV, Strozier’s relatives said he called family members while hiding during the search and was on the phone trying to figure out how to turn himself in when he was shot. Family members told the station he was unarmed.
The GBI confirmed only that officers shot and killed Strozier Tuesday night. The agency had not, as of the report, addressed the family’s account of what happened in the moments before the shooting.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
