ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A fatal hit-and-run in the Dutchtown neighborhood left a cyclist dead after police say a westbound driver slammed into him, crashed into a family’s garage near South Grand and Itaska, and then ran from the scene on foot.
Ahmad Durrani said he and his family were asleep in their south St. Louis home just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday when they were jolted awake by what he described as a loud, horrible bang. When he went outside, he found a car lodged in his garage and a devastating scene around it.
Durrani said the victim’s body and bicycle were pinned beneath his truck after the impact. Inside the damaged garage, pieces of the crash remained visible, including the seat from the cyclist’s bicycle. Durrani’s security camera also captured images of the wreck.
According to KSDK, police said the driver was operating a white 2012 Scion westbound when the vehicle struck the cyclist, pushed the victim through the family’s garage and came to a stop at the home. Investigators said the driver then got out and left the scene on foot instead of remaining there.
Neighbor Jordan Murray told the station he shared surveillance video that appears to show the driver climbing out of the car, walking around the crash scene and then leaving. By Friday night, police said the driver still had not been taken into custody.
Neighbors said speeding has been a persistent problem in the alley despite a posted speed limit of 15 mph. Durrani said he believes the driver should have stopped to help, saying the victim’s life might have been saved if the driver had stayed.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact St. Louis police. CrimeStoppers is also taking tips at 866-371-TIPS (8477), and callers may be eligible for a reward if their information leads to an arrest.
