CARROLLTON, TX —A 69-year-old man was arrested after police said two people were killed and three others were injured in a shooting at Ktowne Plaza, a Carrollton shopping area known for Korean businesses.
Police identified the suspect as Seung Ho Han. He was arrested at about 12:12 p.m. Tuesday after a short foot chase at the H Mart on Old Denton Road in Carrollton.
According to KENS5, Carrollton police said Han has been charged in the shooting, which left five people shot at the plaza.
Officers responded Tuesday morning to the 4000 block of State Highway 121. The Carrollton Police Department described the area as Ktowne Plaza, a commercial district primarily populated by Korean businesses.
When officers arrived, they found five shooting victims. Two of them were pronounced dead, officials said. Three others were injured.
Police said Han reportedly confessed to shooting all five victims. Investigators said he told police he was angry with them over financial disagreements connected to business dealings.
Carrollton Police Chief Roberto Arredondo said investigators determined the suspect and victims had been meeting for “business purposes” before the shooting.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed to WFAA that it assisted Carrollton police at the scene. The FBI and several other federal law enforcement agencies were also present, but investigators said during a news conference that they do not believe the shooting was a hate crime.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The violence stunned longtime residents, who described the area as quiet and safe.
“We’re mourning that this happened,” John Jun with the Korean American Coalition said. “It was unexpected.”
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
