SEATTLE, WA — The family of 19-year-old University of Washington student Juniper C. Blessing is mourning her death after she was stabbed inside a laundry room at an off-campus student housing complex affiliated with the university.

Blessing, who officials identified as a transgender woman, was killed Sunday night near the university campus. Her family described her as highly intelligent, deeply compassionate and exceptionally talented, saying her loss has devastated relatives, friends, mentors and the broader communities connected to her life.

Family members said Blessing was a gifted singer with a transcendent voice who attended the New Mexico School for the Arts before moving to Seattle to study atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington while also minoring in music and philosophy.

Police announced Thursday that a 31-year-old suspect had been arrested in connection with the killing after turning himself in to authorities Wednesday night. A judge later found probable cause for murder and set bail at $10 million.

According to KHOU, investigators said the suspect surrendered hours after police publicly released surveillance photos seeking help identifying him. Seattle police said prosecutors have until Monday to file formal charges.

Authorities said they have not determined a motive and are not currently investigating the case as a hate crime. Investigators are still working to determine whether the stabbing was targeted or random.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
